Federation News

On Wednesday, June 23, 2010,
Sister Glenna Smith, OSB
was elected as the new
President of Saint Scholastica Federation.

The Federation body meets every four years to elect its President and five of her seven councilors.  This year the Federation also approved changes to the Specific Norms of the Constitution, Call To Life, and reflected much about the future of Benedictine Monasticism within North America and the wider world.
Through her talk, "Holding Fast and Letting Go: The Paradoxical Challenge Before Us in These Times" Sister Ephrem Hollermann, OSB shared her wisdom, understanding and questions which gave thought-filled insight towards the establishment of the Federation Direction Statements for the next four years.
Listening Turns the Soul to God
was the theme of the week-long event which was filled with beautiful liturgical prayer, music, loads of dialogue, energy, and an abundance of sunflowers.  The Chapter was also blessed by the presence of the other two Federation Presidents - Sister Joella Kidwell, OSB, Federation of Saint Gertrude and Sister Susan Hutchens, OSB, Federation of Saint Benedict - and the President of the Congregation of Perpetual Adoration, Sister Pat Nyquist, OSB.
Now that Sister Glenna is Federation President, prioress, Sister Cecilia Dwyer, has appointed Sister Andrea Verchuck as subprioress.  Additionally, Linda Zegley will become the Executive Director of the Benedictine Counseling Service (BCS) on July 1.

Congratulations Sister Glenna

We are a community of thirty-two women living The Rule of Benedict, supporting one another in our mutual search for God and ministering to the needs of the Church in Virginia since 1868.
Our daily life in the monastery is comprised of communal prayer, meaningful ministry and the sharing of life in common. Praying the psalms, or the Liturgy of the Hours, at morning,  midday and evening, we bring the needs of our world to the time-less praise of God.

Our ministries, as diverse as the individuals who bring them to life,  include: a transitional housing program for homeless women and their children (Transitional  Housing BARN), an adult literacy project (BEACON), a pastoral center (BPC), a counseling center providing service on a sliding scale (BCS), an elementary school (Linton Hall), and a secondary school for young women in the city of Richmond (Saint Gertrude High School).
Common meals, household chores, and holy  leisure round out the monastic life.   Essentially, we are sanctified by the daily - by seeking God in the everyday moments of life lived simply with gratitude and joy.
