Tutors |
|
Goal: |
To help learners reach their literacy related goals |

Time
Commitment: |
1 1/2 hours per week + preparation and travel time |
|
Duties: |
-
Strong desire to
help others
-
Provide
instruction to small groups in the areas of ESL (English as a
Second Language), GED and Pre-GED (high school equivalency) or
basic literacy (reading, writing, math)
-
Attend tutor
orientation and on-going trainings to stay up to date on the
best ways to provide education to the learners
-
Attend sites
regularly, arriving on time
-
Prepare
activities and lessons based on resources provided by BEACON
and you own ideas
-
communicate with
BEACON staff at sites and through quarterly status reports to
provide volunteer time and program feedback.
-
Be flexible and
able to handle a certain amount of stress and ambiguity
-
Be patient,
social and kind when interacting with learners

Qualifications: |

Have a high
school diploma or GED or be working toward one
-
Be willing to
commit to tutoring once a week for six (6) months or as agreed
upon with BEACON staff (seasonal and project opportunities
available)
-
Have no record of
conviction of any sex offense or any crime of violence
-
Be able to speak
and understand English well enough to communicate clearly
-
Comprehend
materials to be taught and write legibly
-
Second language

One-on-One Tutors |
| Goal: |
To help adult learners reach their literacy related goals |
Time
Commitment: |
1 1/2 hours per week of tutoring + preparation and travel time |

Duties: |
- Have a strong desire to

Child Care Volunteers |
| Goal: |
Care for young children while their parents are studying |
Time
Commitment: |
1 1/2 hours per week plus related preparation and travel time |

Duties: |
- Have a love for children
- Provide a safe and friendly
environment for learners children to play while their
parents are studying
- Provide activities using
BEACON resources and your own ideas
- Handle multiple children at
a time
- Be flexible while
presenting the children with a "structured" environment
- Attend sites regularly,
arriving on time

- Be 15 years or older
- Be able to commit to
watching the children once a week for six (6) weeks
- Have no record of
conviction of any sex offense or any crime of violence
- Be able to speak and
understand English well enough to communicate clearly

Volunteer Opportunities |

assist i the pursuit of the BEACON strategic objectives to (1)
provide free education programs; (2) identify and respond to
changing
needs; (3) leverage well-trained volunteered; (4) explore
alternative
strategies to extend BEACON's capabilities; (5) empower learners to
achieve their goals. |

Duties: |
- Offer training sessions for
staff and tutors
- Offer workshops on topics
of interest to learners and tutors; examples are healthcare,
safety, public policy, finances, public schools,
consumerism, etc.
- Develop resource packs and
lesson plan samples for ESL, Pre-GED, GED and/or basic
literacy to be disseminated to tutors
- Develop new programs such
as office and workforce literacy
- Write or assist in writing
the BEACON quarterly newsletter
- Assist with site clean-up
- Lead or participate in
fundraising activities such as raffles, concessions, etc.
- Facilitate the BEACON booth
at various fairs and other activities
- Communicate with local
churches, businesses and foundations about BEACON and its
vision (community relations)
- Assist in the development
of marketing materials
- Be a member of a Board
